Let’s discover what are the benefits of the combination of surf and yoga and why more and more people are choosing to incorporate these two disciplines in their daily life.
We all know that the wonderful sport of surfing, that fortunately can be practised almost all year round here on the island of Fuerteventura, is based on perfect synchrony between the board and the sea wave. This implies that, once the surfer has achieved balance on the wave, he or she has to remain completely focused for as long as possible, unleashing a mix of agility, readiness and speed.
What are the similarity between yoga and surf?
Similarly to surf, the practice of yoga, which aims to find the divine harmony of body, mind and spirit, also seeks to make the body agile, strong and flexible. For this reason, it is not surprising that many surfing teachers emphasise the importance of yoga to improve balance and performance once on the board in the open sea.
In fact, as Antonio Lennert, Chief Experience Officer of Surf the Greats and certified yoga instructor explains: “When I am out surfing, I also seek this internal balance but with a deep connection to our natural environment. In order to catch a wave, you need to be fully present in the moment, and you also need to vibrate in the same wavelength as the ocean”.
Another characteristic that these two wonderful disciplines have in common are the mental benefits they can foster: both surfing and yoga require, in fact, great concentration and mindfulness in relation to the present moment. On the one hand, the perks of water and its positive effects while surfing are largely recognised as a true blessing for our mental health since they also trigger all five senses and thus promote the complete activation of our system. On the other hand, the practice of yoga, thanks to the rise of serotonin, reduces stress and helps boost the mood, while also increasing attention and concentration.
The great benefits of these two disciplines
To sum up, there is no doubt that these two disciplines, surfing and yoga, especially when combined can form the perfect combination for improving one’s lifestyle and psychophysical condition.
